I can see from some of the search terms that other people are also after a better way to read the 6.002x text. On the site they have now announced a scrolling reader:
https://6002x.mitx.mit.edu/static/contrib/xbook.html

This is not quite the ideal of a Kindle version but it gives three pages at a time and then scrolls fairly seamlessly.

Thanks Yishay. I will have a play with Sigil – at least I have downloaded and so far not been put off by the licence .
